xml - xslt - java - python

Well, I'm trying to improve my skills as a programmer and make myself more valuable. A little history about myself:

For the last 5 years or so I have been in school, chisseling away at degrees to further my education and bring me into a good IT job. My education has been as follows:

  • Associate of Science in Web Administration (Networking, programming, server maintainence, etc.)
    • The knowledge I did garner was ALL SELF TAUGHT. Unfortunately, the real world experience helped me more than school.
  • Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with an emphasis in E-commerce
    • I learned a little more, but still felt my real experience took place in the work force, where I could make IT topics come to life whether it be in the world of programming (java, PHP, coldfusion, etc) , networking, or security.
  • Master of Science in Business Information Systems
    • This has been very refreshing and I have actually learned quite a bit so far dealing with issues such as security, data communications, or e-commerce design.
My real goal is to continue learning languages that can provide me with a competitive advantage as I go out into the real world. Currently I have a job which only requires about 25% IT work, the rest is sales. I don't mind what I do, but it does get in the way of what I really want to do, IT work. This blog is a discovery of some of the languages I will be using and learning.

I've learned some cool stuff at my current job, SEL FOOD SALES, but still wish I could dabble in the IT arena a bit more. My web site is http://www.selfoodsales.com. Within it, I have used HTML, ASP, COLDFUSION, CSS, DOM w/ Javascript, XML, Flash, etc. This has been a great experience, but I know there is more out there. I have created some cool applications such as a sample order tool for customers, an employee hour time-clock, and a sample order management tool for keeping track of the customers who order what and when to follow up with them.

My goal is to learn language after language, spending no more than 3 weeks for language. I will start out with JAVA, which I've already given about 3-4 weeks of time (understandibly with all the class libraries and aspects to learn). I will encorporate java with XML, XSLT, etc, to build the bonneville IFT site. We will go from there.
